Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens, better than Queen Latifah the US, is an actress and rapper. The work of Queen Latifah in film, television and music has won many awards. They include a Golden Globe Award two Screen Actors Guild Awards Two Image Awards A Grammy Award Six additional Grammy nominations, an Emmy Award Nomination and an Academy Award. Queen Latifah was born in Newark, NJ. Her parents are Rita Owens, Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Latifah's parents divorced at the age of 10 years old. Latifah attended a Catholic school, and she was educated at Newark New Jersey. She went to the Baptist church. At the age of 8 Her cousin gifted her the stage name Latifah which translates to tender and gentle in Arabic. Latifah is a tall girl of 5'10 inches who played on the high school basketball squad. She performed the song "Home" from The Wiz in the course of a show in her high school. Latifah was part of Ladies Fresh, a rap group that launched her journey into beatboxing. Latifah joined the Flavor Unit in its original version, made up of a team of MCs with producer DJ Mark The 45 King. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King, recorded Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. The recorded was sent to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music signed Latifah upon hearing the track. She released her first single, Wrath of My Madness, in 1988.
